PowerPoint - Line from text box remains when printing

Asked By Gin on 29-May-08 11:20 AM
I "drew" a box to cover an unwanted portion of a picture on my slide. I
colored the box white and removed the line. The line is not visible on the
slide or slide show. But it IS visibile in print preview and when I print.
How can I get rid of the line?

Try changing the outline color to White (or to match the fill color of
the box).

I tried that. It did not work.

Change printer settings from Black&White to Grayscale.

It is. Grayscale does not work either.

I almost said that some printer drivers make it impossible when I
first posted. In my experience HPs are notorious for this ill-
mannered behavior.

Three more things to try:

1). Even though it is a B&W printer, try setting the printer to Color
(if the driver offers that). Many black and white printers will
convert the colors to shades of gray - but without substituting black
for the background color in the shape outline. This will mean it will
try to match the color and since it is specified as white it should
remove the line.

2). If that doesn't work, try setting the line width to zero.

3). If that doesn't work set the color to the lightest non-white you
can, say a custom color of 254, 254, 254.

Finally, if all else fails refer to the manufacturer's website for
possible solutions or a newer print driver.

With Microsoft programs, you always have to find creative ways around their
shortcomings. This is how I worked around the problem:
1. I printed a hardcopy of the picture
2. Placed a piece of paper over the area I didn't want showing
3. Copied the picture
4. Scanned my new hardcopy picture
5. Emailed it to myself
6. Copied/pasted the new electronic picture into the powerpoint.

MSPaint might have been easier and provided a better quality
result ;-)

Is the "line" a transparent area in your picture? Some PostScript-based
printer drivers have problems with transparency. In that case either remove
transparency from picture or try a non-PS printer driver.

Simple Solution - can't believe I figured it out.

Right click on text box, go to Format Text Box.

Look at Fill Color, it is probably set to white, change it to no fill and make sure you have the line set to no line.

That light, thin line that only appears when you print off the slide will suddenly disappear!!

The SAME thing happened to me. This is how I solved it.

Select the masking shae that shows outlined during print, or print prieview.

Right-click on it.

The pull-down dialogue box has an option called "format shape" at the bottom - click on it.

In the "Fill portion of the window, select:

Slide background fill, then "close"

That's it - you're done! lines are gone from printed copy and preview.

Bit of a convoluted solution but here's what I do to overcome those annoying boxes and lines you don't want in your print.

Once you've completed your Powerpoint slide take a screen dump (using the Prt Scr keyboard key).

Open Paint and paste the image.

Draw a box around what you want and copy.

Open Word or something similar.

Paste the image you copied from Paint and then print it.

Go to the print box, File->Print. On the left hand side, 2/3 of the way down is a menu titled 'Color/grayscale'. You have a choice of 'Color', 'Grayscale' and 'Pure Black and White'. If you set it to 'Color', the black lines around text boxes and rectangles will not appear, as you can see by clicking on 'Preview' - this setting is independent of the setting in the printer dialog box which you get once you click on 'OK'. So you can select 'Color' in PowerPoint (removing the boxes) and 'Black and White' in the printer dialog.

This works on PowerPoint 2003 (and other versions?)
